Presenting GEMINI, a collaboration between Aláti and Glasnost for Summer 2012.
Delicate and fierce. Silent and sassy. Santa and santita.
Roman and Greek mythology pay their respects to Castor and Pollux, the warrior twins comprising the Gemini symbol. Though equal in strength, they represent the divide between what is human and what is divine - the two sides to every mere mortal
Each woman is a combination of polar opposites, of well-mannered graces and untempered passions. She is not both but all - an endless mystery whose needs we both understand and appreciate. Gemini was born in response to this feminine enigma. A collaboration between two brands, the synergy brings into this dual faceted persona into existence.
First, there is Glasnost by designer Stacy Rodriguez, which translates this concept with a focus on fabric and more brazen design choices than in past collections. Rodriguez evokes a strong statement of color and print with a refined adaptation of her classic bleach-dye, unveiling layers of color and texture underneath an austere sheet of cloth.
There is also an almost literal interpretation with her split-pattern pieces and subtle color blocking by means of a cuff or a strap. It is joined by a more complex adaptation via a ways to wear piece in a bold fabric, encapsulating the idea of giving a woman the perfect tools to express her differing needs, moods, and desires.
These pieces are further amped up by accessories from Aláti by designer Gabriela Tatad. Her pieces dance along the borders of each persona, combining the light with the substantial and leveling it all out with a use of texture. There is also an exploration of colors that had yet to be introduced into the Aláti palette — olive green, dark peachy coral, soft purples, royal blue, and marbled metals.
Each one finds a balance between industrial and delicate, mixing dried corals with gold wirework and baked clay centerpieces with semi-precious stones. It is expressed in the most subtle ways, whether with three different lacquer finishes in one piece or the indelicacy of the wirework, even though each piece comes with its own unmistakable voice.
This collaboration would not have been fully realized without the participation of the campaign’s faces, Pauline Prieto and Helena Belmonte, who while equally beautiful, each represent a difference in quiet sensuality and colorful candor. Also bringing their specialty to the party are An and En Estrada of YourEvilTwin, whose creative eye and specialty in the Gemini have translated into an ingenious look book.
Completing the collaborative experience is a fashion film produced with Overmind Creatives, premiered at the Gemini launch at Prive Luxury Lounge on March 15, 2012 and available for viewing afterward on both the Glasnost and Aláti websites.
